Getting the Most out of a Clothes Steamer

May 4th, 2012

Over the past few years the usage of clothes steamers has become widespread, particularly throughout the various facets of the fashion industry.

As technology has improved, the humble garment steamer has become smaller, more powerful and more adaptable to daily use in a wider array of locations.

Below are a few of tips you may find useful when purchasing and using a steamer which are relevant whether you’re a retailer planning to promote your clothing on shop fittings or if you’re a home owner looking to save time on ironing.

5 Tips for Using Your Steamer

Choosing the right unit: We understand that not everyone purchasing a steamer has the same circumstances. This is why we offer steamers in a wide range of styles, colours, powers, sizes and designs. Choosing one that suits your personal needs is easy – simply choose either ‘commercial’ or ‘domestic’ and then use price, power and other attributes to whittle down your search

Descaling your steamer: Depending on the area you live, the water you use can vary dramatically in its overall quality. ‘Hard water’ poses a problem in many areas of the UK and can potentially be damaging to the inner workings of a clothes steamer. Using steamer descaler solution is a great way of prolonging the life of the unit.

Underside steaming: You may find that a few articles of clothing are better suited to being steamed from the opposite side. This is particularly relevant to any piece of clothing that has decorations on the front that may make it difficult to touch the material directly with the steam head.

Managing condensation: Water droplets and larger areas of condensation can sometimes collect on the steamer if the head is not presented in an upright position. It’s always worth keeping an eye on any condensation to help avoid garments getting wet if they were to come into contact with the liquid.

Traveller?: Making sure you’ve always got a steamer at hand, even when you’re on the road, is important for many of our customers. Investing in one of our growing range of hand-held travel steamers is a great solution for anyone who travels a lot but needs to have the instant ability to steam their clothing on or off clothes hangers.

We hope that these tips help you whenever you’re using your steamer or searching for a new one. For those looking for an all round steamer we tend to advise purchasing a Beststeam (code: GAR1500). We’re always looking to source the newest and best steamers to add to our hugely popular existing selection of units so make sure you check back regularly to ensure you don’t miss out!

Marks & Spencers Unveil Shop Fittings In New Paris Store

November 25th, 2011

UK Retail giant Marks and Spencers have returned to the continent for the first time in a decade and are set to open the doors of their flagship Parisian store today.

Situated on the iconic Avenue des Champs Elysées, the store will offer French customers the chance to experience the clothing and food lines that have become so popular in the UK.

The stores shop fittings will be used to display a number of quintessential British products as well as items targeted at the French market.

Covering three storeys, the UK company will replace Esprit in the 8th arrondissement, within the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe.

Parisian Shop Fittings

English favourites such as Earl Grey tea and pork pies will now be available to visitors of the French capital, although the food section is limited to just 100sq metres of the 1,400sq metre retail space.

Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley will join the company chief executive Marc Bolland to open the doors of the bold new store.

Mr Bolland commented: “We are not into fast fashion. We are not producing clothes that have to be thrown away after six washes or a couple of months because they have lost their colour or shape or have shrunk.”

“The French wrote to us too saying they missed M&S. They were looking for cashmere sweaters.”

European Fashion & Retail Displays

The return to the French market will be a welcome sight for many expats, who witnessed the 38 European stores shut down back in 2001, including 10 outlets in Paris itself.

The withdrawal from Europe in order to focus on the British market is now widely regarded by analysts as a poor decision by the company.

However, with rumoured plans to open a further five Paris stores, it looks like this time M&S are here to stay.

Cake Stands Full Due To Groupon Offer Gone Wrong

November 22nd, 2011

A recent posting on popular money saving site Groupon had dramatic effects for a cake making company.

After offering Groupon subscribers a 75% discount on 12 cupcakes, company ‘Need A Cake’ was unprepared for the overwhelming influx of orders.

Almost 9,000 people signed up for the deal which cost £6.50, a saving of £19.50 on the standard price for the cupcakes.

However, it soon became apparent that the popularity of the offer backfired.

Not Enough Cake Stands!

Rachel Brown’s company suddenly found itself with the responsibility of filling their cake stands with over 102,000 cupcakes!

Used to making just 100 cup cakes in an average month, this posed a serious problem for Mrs Brown.

To fulfill the huge order, Need a Cake had to bring in 25 agency staff to help the 8 full time employees, all of whom worked into the early hours of the morning.

Full Cake Platters

Mrs Brown, 50, made a loss-making £2.50 per order and paid £12,500 for the extra costs of staff and distribution, wiping out her profits for the year.

She was quoted in the Metro as saying: “‘Without doubt, it’s the worst business decision I have ever made. It’s been an absolute nightmare.

‘We only expected to get a few hundred orders out of it but we had thousands and thousands pouring in.’

A Groupon director stated that they had been in ‘constant contact’ with Need A Cake and had not been aware of any issues.

US-based Groupon offers coupons to its subscribers, giving them huge discount deals on a wide range of services.

Bear Avoidance Tips Available from Montana Brochure Dispensers

September 16th, 2011

Bear Avoidance Tips available from Montana Brochure DispensersMontana brochure dispensers will soon feature informative materials that offer tips to hunters on avoiding bears in the region, according to the Lake County Leader.

The news statement read: “huckleberry-pickers, hikers, and, soon, bird hunters and archery hunters” can all benefit from the important safety tips that are discussed in the new brochure.

Some of these safety precautions include letting a friend or relative know where the hunting will be taking place and when it is scheduled to finish, calling out or talking loudly to make your presence known and carrying bear spray and knowing how to properly use it. Hiking in groups and keeping children close at all times is another important point raised in the brochure.

Backpackers are also reminded that food storage orders are now in effect for many of the national parks. These orders require food items to be at least 10 feet above the ground and 4 feet from top and side supports.

Brochure dispensers in the area are expected to be regularly stocked as Montana boasts the most hunters per capita than any other state in the U.S.

Cake stands increasingly adorned with paper doilies

March 22nd, 2011

Cake stands increasingly adorned with paper doiliesMore cake stands may be adorned with traditional paper doilies as sales of the decorative items have increased.

According to an article in the Daily Mail, the hike in sales is due to the "surge in popularity" of baking.

Due to increased demand, kitchen-wear store Lakeland introduced a new range of doilies last year.

Matthew Canwell, the store's buying director, told the news provider: "We have recognised that there is a definite trend in doilies.

"We are adding more ranges to address this and they're proving popular. There has been a renewed interest in afternoon tea and, in the last few years, sales of baking products have more than doubled for us. There is a further growth in interest this year."

The name doily originates from the name of a fabric made by Doiley, a 17th-century London draper.

Sales of paper doilies skyrocketed in the 1950s as a cheap alternative to crochet linen doilies.

Sussex cake stand reveals likeness of Prince William and Kate Middleton

March 15th, 2011

Sussex cake stand reveals likeness of Prince William and Kate MiddletonA cake stand in Sussex currently holds a tasty treat that looks like Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Michelle Wibowo, of Burgess Hill, has made a cake that looks very much like the royal couple, who are set to marry in Westminster Abbey on April 29th.

Ms Wibowo spend 80 hours creating the cake, which is a fruit cake covered in apricot jam, marzipan and icing sugar.

The icing was then airbrushed in order to make Prince William and his future bride's features more realistic.

"I used this cake competition as a great opportunity to do something different, other than the usual traditional decorated round tiered cake people normally expect for a wedding cake. It was really a challenge for me to do this cake. It's hard work, but I really enjoyed making it," Ms Wibowo revealed.

The cake will be the centrepiece of the royal themed wedding cake competition being held at the Ideal Home Show in Earls Court, London.

Tesco to help bakers create goods for cake standsMore people may soon be creating goods to go in cake stands as Tesco is to launch a bakery apprenticeship scheme.

Tesco has worked in partnership with Improve, the Sector Skills Council for Bakery to design the apprenticeship programme.

Apprenticeship training will take place in stores across England in four hour blocks each month.

Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen in 1919. It is now the fourth largest retailer in the world.
