Many newspapers were up in arms last week after award winning novelist Hilary Mantel was quoted saying some seemingly derogatory remarks about the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton.
Despite being apparently misquoted by the nations media we believe that some of the insinuations regarding the Duchess warrant a rebuttal.
The reference to the Duchess resembling “a shop window mannequin” was something that particularly struck a chord with us here at Displaysense.
Here are 5 (light-hearted) reasons that being compared to a shop mannequin maybe isn’t such a bad thing after all:
1) Highly Respected Stalwart of the Fashion Industry
Mannequins have proven again and again to be one the major display tools at a fashion retailers’ disposal. Whether they’re used in large department stores or in small side-street indies, the humble shop mannequin continues to be the jewel in many fashion retailers display crowns.
2) Proven to Help the High Street
There’s a reason that shop floors and shop windows continue to fall back on mannequin displays: they work. Any fashion retailer worth their salt understands just how important investing in their shop fittings is, especially in today’s challenging economic climate.
3) Versatile & Highly Adaptable
One of Mantel’s assertions was that ‘shop mannequin’ Kate had “no personality”. As a proud display company we feel it’s worth highlighting how much personality a mannequin can bring to a store! Available in a massive choice of designs, colours and poses, it’s a little unfair to suggest that a shop mannequin is entirely devoid of charm.
4) Able to Transcend Barriers
The role of a modern princess involves meeting a wide variety of cultures and working as a social envoy to foreign nations. Whilst we’re not suggesting a shop dummy can seriously be used in this capacity they do offer an instant ability to showcase an incredibly diverse array of garments; promoting items without the need for language. For stores who encounter foreign visitors and tourists who may not speak English this can be an invaluable attribute.
5) Years of Reliable Service
Already praised for her busy schedule meeting and greeting world leaders, opening new buildings and backing worthy causes, Princess Middleton seems to have a long future ahead of her as a valuable national treasure. A well maintained mannequin or display bust also offers many years of service, although maybe not the best option for unveiling a new hospital.
