Noticeboards:
Education and Healthcare Display Solutions

Noticeboards are wall-mounted pin and display surfaces in felt, cork, and antimicrobial fabric for schools, universities, NHS facilities, and offices. Fire-resistant models rated BS EN 13501-1 Class B are required for UK school corridors, stairwells, and fire escape routes where standard boards are prohibited. Lockable versions have hinged polycarbonate-glazed doors with key locks for public areas. External waterproof noticeboards have rubber seals for outdoor installation. Frameless acoustic boards absorb sound alongside displaying notices. Sizes from 900x600mm to 2400x1200mm. PO accepted from all public sector organisations.

Noticeboards in institutional environments carry a compliance requirement as well as an information function. In UK school corridors and NHS hospital corridors, building regulations require fire-resistant surfaces rated to BS EN 13501-1 Class B. A standard felt or cork noticeboard in a fire escape corridor is non-compliant and a liability in the event of a fire safety inspection. Displaysense provides fire rating certification with all Class B boards to support facilities managers in demonstrating compliance.

Our most popular institutional noticeboards include the 1200x900mm fire-retardant felt noticeboard for school corridors, the 1800x1200mm version for larger display areas, and our lockable noticeboard range for NHS waiting rooms and university campus public areas. For outdoor installation, see our external noticeboards.

Fire-Resistant Class B for Corridors and Escape Routes

UK building regulations require noticeboards in circulation areas including corridors, stairwells, and fire escape routes to be rated to BS EN 13501-1 Class B (previously Class 0) to prevent flame spread in the event of a fire. Standard cork and felt noticeboards are non-compliant in these positions. Our fire-retardant felt noticeboards carry the Class B certification and documentation required to demonstrate compliance during building safety inspections.

Lockable Tamperproof Boards for Public Areas

Our lockable noticeboards have hinged doors with polycarbonate-glazed fronts and key locks, allowing notices to be displayed and read through the glazing while preventing unauthorised removal, addition, or defacement of content. The standard for NHS waiting rooms displaying patient information, university campus public areas, housing association communal spaces, and any position where notice content must be controlled and verified.

Felt, Cork, and Antimicrobial Surface Options

Felt surfaces accept pins cleanly, are available in a wide range of colours for departmental colour-coding, and are the standard for fire-rated institutional boards. Cork is a self-healing natural material that closes around pin holes and suits general office and classroom positions. Antimicrobial surfaces incorporate silver-ion treatment that inhibits bacterial growth, the specification required for NHS clinical areas and healthcare environments where surface hygiene is a primary concern.

External Waterproof Boards for Outdoor Installation

Our external noticeboards have rubber-sealed frames and heavy-duty key locks for permanent outdoor installation at school gates, church entrances, parish council positions, and sports club facilities. The rubber seal prevents water ingress that would cause standard indoor felt boards to absorb moisture, grow mould, and deteriorate. Do not install standard indoor noticeboards in outdoor or exposed covered positions.

Frameless Acoustic Boards for Noise Reduction

Frameless noticeboards are fabric-wrapped to the full edge with no aluminium border, allowing multiple boards to be butted together to create a continuous notice wall or acoustic panel. The fabric and foam backing absorbs sound as well as displaying information, reducing reverberation in open-plan offices, university learning commons, and noisy classrooms where wall-to-wall coverage provides both information display and meaningful acoustic treatment.

Felt Colour Ranges for Departmental Coding

Our felt noticeboards are available in a wide range of colours, allowing facilities managers to colour-code displays by department, priority, or function across a building. Standard institutional schemes include blue for NHS admin, red for urgent safety notices, green for clinical information, and yellow for general staff communications. Consistent colour coding across a large facility helps staff locate relevant information boards quickly without reading every board in a corridor.

Fire-Rated, Lockable, External or Acoustic?

For school corridors, stairwells, and NHS hospital corridors where building regulations apply, fire-rated Class B boards are mandatory. For public waiting areas and campus positions where notice content must be controlled, lockable boards are the appropriate choice. For outdoor installation at gates and building exteriors, external waterproof boards are required. For open-plan offices and classrooms where acoustic treatment is needed alongside information display, frameless acoustic boards are the most cost-effective combined solution.

For School and NHS Corridors

Our fire-retardant felt noticeboards carry BS EN 13501-1 Class B fire rating certification and documentation for building safety compliance. Available in the full felt colour range for departmental coding. PO accepted from all state schools, academies, colleges, and NHS trusts on 30-day credit terms. Certification documents provided on request to support building safety inspection files.

For NHS Waiting Rooms and University Campuses

Our lockable noticeboards with polycarbonate-glazed doors and key locks allow patient information, statutory notices, and managed content to be displayed in public areas while preventing unauthorised access to the notice surface. The standard specification for housing association communal areas, university campus public buildings, and NHS trust waiting rooms where displaying and controlling specific information is a regulatory requirement.

For School Gates and Outdoor Positions

Our external noticeboards with rubber-sealed waterproof frames and cylinder key locks are designed for permanent outdoor installation. Available in single-door and double-door formats with felt or felt-and-cork interior surfaces. The standard for primary and secondary school gate noticeboards, parish council outdoor notice positions, community centre external displays, and sports club facility entrance boards.

What fire rating is required for noticeboards in school corridors?
UK building regulations require noticeboards in circulation areas including corridors, stairwells, and fire escape routes to carry a BS EN 13501-1 Class B fire rating (previously referred to as Class 0). This rating means the board surface has been tested and certified to resist the spread of flame under defined conditions. Standard cork and felt noticeboards without this rating are not compliant for installation in these positions, regardless of how they look or how long they have been there. Displaysense provides the Class B certification documentation with all fire-rated boards to support compliance records. For classrooms and low-risk office positions away from circulation routes, standard non-rated boards are generally acceptable, but confirm with your local authority and building control officer.
What is the difference between cork and felt noticeboards?
Cork is a natural self-healing material: the surface closes around pin holes after pins are removed, maintaining a clean appearance over years of heavy use. Cork provides a traditional appearance suited to school classrooms, university offices, and general office environments. Felt (woven fabric) is available in a wide range of colours for departmental colour-coding, accepts fire-retardant treatment for Class B rating, and provides a slightly firmer pin surface than cork. Felt is the standard surface for institutional fire-rated boards because fire-retardant treatment can be incorporated into the felt weave during manufacture without affecting pin performance.
What is an antimicrobial noticeboard and where is it required?
Antimicrobial noticeboards incorporate silver-ion technology in the surface material that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mould, and fungi on the board surface. This is a hygiene specification rather than a fire safety specification. It is required or strongly recommended in NHS clinical areas including wards, treatment rooms, and clinical offices where surface hygiene standards apply to all fixed fittings, and in food preparation environments where biological contamination of display surfaces is a concern. Antimicrobial treatment does not affect pin performance or fire rating; the two specifications can be combined.
Can noticeboards be installed on plasterboard or stud partition walls?
Yes, but the correct wall fixings are essential. Standard screws into plasterboard without appropriate plugs will not hold a noticeboard securely, particularly a lockable noticeboard which can weigh 10 to 20kg. Use cavity fixings (such as toggle bolts or hollow-wall anchors) rated for the weight of the specific board being installed. For large or heavy lockable boards, fixing into the stud behind the plasterboard provides the most secure installation. The fixing points for most noticeboards are at the four corners and are concealed under plastic caps once fitted.
Are outdoor noticeboards fully waterproof?
Our external noticeboards have rubber gasket seals around the door frame and polycarbonate or toughened glass glazing that prevents rain and condensation from reaching the notice surface inside. Do not use standard indoor felt noticeboards in outdoor positions: the unsealed frame allows water to contact the felt surface, causing moisture absorption, mould growth, surface degradation, and in winter, frost damage to both the frame and the surface. External noticeboards are specifically designed and tested for outdoor installation.
What are frameless noticeboards and how are they installed?
Frameless noticeboards are fabric-wrapped pinboards with no aluminium border frame, covered in fabric right to the edge. Multiple boards butt together seamlessly to create a continuous notice wall without visible joins between boards, enabling wall-to-wall coverage in corridors and open-plan spaces. They are fixed to the wall using concealed fixings in the back of the board rather than visible corner screws. The fabric and foam core absorbs sound as well as providing a pin surface, making frameless boards the most cost-effective way to provide both information display capacity and acoustic treatment from a single wall installation.
