Portable Room Dividers:
Mobile Partition Screens

Portable room dividers are freestanding mobile partition screens that create temporary private and divided spaces within open-plan areas without building work. Concertina folding versions expand from compact flat storage to 5-7 metres of continuous partition wall. Castor-mounted mobile screens with lockable wheels for single-person repositioning. Loop nylon surface accepts pins and Velcro for double-sided mobile noticeboard use. Height options: 1200mm (seated desk privacy), 1500mm, and 1800mm (full standing privacy). Acoustic core versions for noise reduction in offices and exam halls. Fire-retardant BS EN 13501-1 Class B versions for circulation area use. Anti-microbial easy-clean vinyl surfaces for healthcare environments. Linking strips for continuous wall runs. PO accepted from schools, NHS trusts, and councils on 30-day credit terms.

A school hall used for assemblies, examinations, and medical screening in the same week needs flexible spatial division that sets up and packs away in minutes without specialist staff. A hospital ward screening a patient bay needs a mobile screen that is fire-rated, cleanable between patients, and repositionable without tools. An agile office reconfiguring for team workshops needs partition that creates meeting room privacy from open-plan space in the time it takes to arrange the chairs. Portable room dividers solve all three problems from a single product range without the time, cost, and permanence of building work.

Our portable room divider range includes concertina folding screens, mobile castor-mounted panels, acoustic room dividers for noise-sensitive environments, and healthcare-specification vinyl-surface screens. For permanent or semi-permanent partition walls see our display boards and freestanding noticeboards.

5-7m Per
Folding Unit

Concertina Folding: 5-7 Metres from a Single Flat Unit

Concertina dividers consist of multiple hinged panels that fold flat to a fraction of their extended width for storage against a wall or in a storage cupboard. A 9-panel unit folds to approximately 600mm wide and extends to over 5 metres of continuous partition wall in a straight line, curved arc, or zig-zag configuration depending on the hinge type. The folded unit stands or wheels to a storage position without dismantling. A single member of staff unfolds, positions, and locks the unit in place in under 5 minutes. Multiple units link end-to-end for partitions of any total length required.

Lockable Castors for Single-Person Repositioning

Mobile room divider screens mount on 360-degree castors that roll freely for repositioning and lock in position during use. The locked position prevents any movement when the screen is in use as a partition or noticeboard surface. A single staff member can manoeuvre a fully assembled screen from a storage position to the required room layout position without assistance, and lock it in place without tools. The low centre of gravity on castor-based designs provides the stability needed in busy school and hospital environments where contact with the screen base is a regular occurrence.

Acoustic Core for Noise Reduction in Offices and Exam Halls

Standard room dividers provide visual privacy and a physical barrier, but do not significantly reduce sound transmission between divided spaces. Our acoustic room dividers have a sound-absorbing core material that reduces noise passing through the panel, creating a meaningfully quieter environment on each side of the partition. For open-plan offices where meeting conversations must not disrupt adjacent working areas, and for exam halls where student separation must also reduce ambient noise, the acoustic version provides the combined visual and noise management function of a temporary partition that a standard screen does not.

Pinnable Loop Nylon Surface: Double-Sided Mobile Noticeboard

The loop nylon fabric covering on both faces of each panel accepts standard push pins and Velcro hook tape independently, converting the full length of the extended partition into double-sided mobile display surface. A school using the divider to partition a hall for an art show can display student work directly onto both faces. An office using the divider to create a meeting area can pin printed agenda sheets, project plans, and sticky note working materials to both sides simultaneously. The same unit serves as the room partition and the display surface without requiring a separate noticeboard alongside the screen.

Height Options from Desk Privacy to Full Room Division

Screen height determines the privacy level. A 1200mm screen creates seated desk privacy: a person standing can see over the top of the screen, but a seated person is visually separated from adjacent positions. This suits open-plan office hotdesk screening and exam desk separation where invigilator supervision over the top of the screen is required. A 1500mm screen creates a standing person's eye-line barrier for most adults. A 1800mm screen creates full standing height visual separation that effectively creates a room within a room for medical screening bays, consultation areas, and changing facilities in temporary public health settings.

Anti-Microbial Vinyl and Fire-Rated Versions for Healthcare

For NHS and healthcare positions where infection control is a priority, we offer dividers with anti-microbial vinyl surfaces that wipe clean with standard healthcare disinfectant between patient uses. The vinyl surface is non-porous and does not harbour bacteria in the material fibres in the way that fabric surfaces can. For positions in hospital corridors and circulation areas, our fire-retardant Class B versions carry BS EN 13501-1 certification, the compliance documentation required for fire risk assessment records and estates sign-off in NHS facilities. Confirm the specific surface and fire-rating specification at order for healthcare procurement purposes.

School Hall, Hospital Ward, Office or Exam?

Schools need concertina folding units for rapid multi-use hall reconfiguration. NHS and healthcare positions need anti-microbial vinyl surfaces and fire-rated Class B certification. Open-plan offices need castor-mounted acoustic screens for meeting privacy and noise reduction. Exam halls need 1200mm screens for invigilator sightline over the top alongside student visual separation.

For School Halls and Multi-Use Spaces

Concertina folding dividers suit the school hall that hosts assemblies, lunches, examinations, and art shows in the same week. The folded unit stores compactly in a cupboard or against a wall; a single staff member unfolds and positions the screen for each activity configuration. Our 1800mm height suits exam separation where visual isolation is required. Our 1200mm height suits seated separation where invigilator supervision from a standing position over the screen is needed. Loop nylon surfaces display artwork, project materials, and notices on both faces. PO accepted from all schools on 30-day credit terms.

For NHS Wards and Healthcare Environments

Anti-microbial vinyl surface screens are the correct specification for NHS vaccination centres, patient screening bays, ward consultation areas, and any healthcare position where the screen surface contacts patients or requires regular disinfectant cleaning. The non-porous vinyl wipes clean without the fabric fibre contamination risk of standard loop nylon. Fire-rated Class B versions meet NHS estates requirements for circulation area compliance. Purchase orders accepted from NHS trusts, health boards, and clinical commissioning organisations with fire-rating certification documentation provided for procurement records.

For Open-Plan Offices and Agile Working

Castor-mounted acoustic screens suit open-plan offices reconfiguring daily for different team layouts, hotdesking environments where individual focus areas are needed, and meeting spaces created within open floors where both visual privacy and noise reduction are required. The 1500mm height provides standing privacy without completely enclosing the space. Loop nylon surfaces accept project planning materials, sticky notes, and printed references on both faces for collaborative working sessions. No wall fixing needed; no planning permission; no installation time beyond positioning and locking the castors.

Facility Management Solutions:
The Displaysense Advantage

Displaysense has supplied portable room dividers to schools, NHS trusts, councils, and corporate organisations across the UK for nearly 50 years. We understand that modern facilities need to serve multiple functions in the same space throughout the week, and that the cost and disruption of permanent building work for temporary spatial needs is impractical. Our room dividers are designed for the daily deployment cycle of institutional use: rapid setup by a single staff member, full activity use with the stability and compliance required in public buildings, and compact storage between deployments. Fire-rated certification documentation is provided for all Class B versions for NHS and school compliance records.

What is the difference between a concertina folding divider and a mobile screen panel?
A concertina folding divider consists of multiple hinged panels connected in a single unit that folds flat to a fraction of its extended width for storage. It extends to create a continuous partition wall of 5 to 7 metres from a single unit and can be configured in a straight line, curve, or zig-zag depending on the hinge design. It stores compactly and is the most space-efficient format for creating a long continuous partition from a single unit. A mobile screen panel is typically a single or double-panel unit on lockable castors that rolls freely between positions. Mobile panels link together end-to-end via linking strips to create walls of any length, but each panel is a separate unit that stores individually rather than folding into a single compact stack. Mobile panels suit environments where individual screens are used in different positions throughout the building on different days; concertina units suit positions where the full wall length is always deployed together.
Do room dividers block sound?
Standard fabric-covered room dividers reduce sound transmission somewhat due to the fabric absorbing some high-frequency sound, but they do not provide significant noise reduction across the full frequency range. They create visual privacy and a psychological sense of separation more effectively than acoustic separation. For meaningful noise reduction, specify our acoustic room divider range, which uses a sound-absorbing core material that reduces sound transmission across a broader frequency range. Acoustic dividers suit open-plan offices where meeting conversations should not disrupt adjacent working areas, and exam halls where ambient noise reduction is required alongside visual separation. No portable partition provides the full sound isolation of a permanent wall.
Are room dividers fire-rated and do I need fire-rated versions for a school?
We offer specific fire-retardant versions tested to BS EN 13501-1 Class B, the minimum rating required for display and partition surfaces in school corridors, stairwells, and fire escape routes. Standard fabric-covered room dividers without fire-rating are not compliant for permanent positions in these areas. For a school hall or open area that is not a designated escape route, standard dividers are acceptable for the duration of use in that space. For positions that are circulation areas or that form part of a fire escape route while deployed, fire-rated Class B versions are the correct specification. Certification documentation is provided with all Class B versions for fire risk assessment records. If in doubt about the fire safety requirements for your specific building, consult your building's responsible person or fire risk assessor before purchasing.
Can room dividers be used as noticeboards?
Yes. Loop nylon fabric surfaces on both faces of each panel accept standard push pins and Velcro hook tape, creating a double-sided mobile noticeboard across the full extended length of the divider. Push pins penetrate the loop nylon cleanly and hold notices, artwork, and cards securely. Velcro hook tape grips the loop nylon surface without pins, allowing laminated notices and card-backed items to attach without visible pin holes. The noticeboard function is available on both faces simultaneously, allowing different content to be displayed on each side. For dividers with vinyl surfaces (healthcare specification), the vinyl does not accept pins or Velcro; display items must be attached with tape or hook-on clips for vinyl surfaces.
Do you have hygiene-compliant versions for hospitals and vaccination centres?
Yes. Our anti-microbial vinyl surface room dividers are specifically designed for NHS and healthcare positions where infection control between patient uses is a requirement. The non-porous vinyl surface wipes clean with standard healthcare disinfectant solutions without degrading the surface material over repeated cleaning cycles. The vinyl surface does not harbour bacteria in material fibres the way fabric does. For NHS vaccination centre use, our 1800mm high mobile screens on lockable castors create individual patient screening bays that reposition rapidly as the vaccination station layout changes throughout the session. Fire-rated Class B versions with vinyl surfaces are available for ward corridor and circulation area positions.
What is the maximum partition length achievable?
A single 9-panel concertina unit extends to approximately 5 to 7 metres depending on the individual panel width. Multiple units link end-to-end via linking strips to create a continuous partition of any total length. For a school hall of 20 metres width requiring a full cross-hall partition, three or four linked units cover the full span. For a hospital ward requiring a 10-metre screening bay, two units linked provide the full length. There is no practical maximum length when linking multiple units: the limit is the number of units available and the floor area of the space. Each additional unit adds its full extended length to the total partition run.
Do you accept Purchase Orders from schools, councils, and NHS trusts?
Yes. We accept official Purchase Orders from state schools, academies, colleges, universities, NHS trusts, local councils, housing associations, and all public sector organisations on 30-day credit terms. Fire-rated Class B certification documentation is provided with all compliant versions for your procurement and compliance records. Volume discounts apply for large quantity orders covering multiple units for hall, ward, and campus-wide fit-outs.
