Combination Boards:
Dual-Purpose Notice and Whiteboard

Combination boards are single wall-mounted units split 50/50 between a magnetic dry-wipe lacquered steel whiteboard half and a pinnable felt or cork noticeboard half, in a shared anodised aluminium frame. One board, one wall fixing, two distinct communication surfaces. Whiteboard half: dry-wipe markers and magnetic document attachment. Noticeboard half: push pins and Velcro on felt; push pins on cork. Standard sizes 900x600mm and 1200x900mm. Board can be rotated 180 degrees at installation to position whiteboard left or right. Pen tray included. Standard for classroom and office positions; not suitable for fire escape routes without Class B fire-rated version. PO accepted from schools, NHS trusts, and universities on 30-day credit terms.

A staff room, nursing station, or classroom typically needs both surfaces: a dry-wipe area for daily messages, handover notes, and the working content that changes throughout the day, and a pinboard area for the permanent or semi-permanent notices that stay in position for days or weeks, such as shift rotas, policy documents, emergency contact lists, and statutory health and safety notices. Two separate boards require double the wall space and double the fixing points. A combination board provides both surfaces on a single unit occupying no more wall space than one board of the equivalent height.

Our combination board range includes standard sizes in felt and cork noticeboard variants, and fire-rated Class B versions for positions requiring corridor compliance. For a full-width magnetic whiteboard without a noticeboard section see our magnetic whiteboards. For a full-width pinboard without a whiteboard see our noticeboards collection.

Two Communication Functions from One Wall Fixing

A combination board occupies the same wall area as a single board of the equivalent height while providing two distinct communication surfaces: the whiteboard half for erasable daily content and the noticeboard half for pinned semi-permanent content. In a staff room, nursing station, or small office where wall space is limited, the combination board eliminates the requirement for a second fixing point and second board, keeping the communication area compact and organised on a single unit.

Magnetic Lacquered Steel Whiteboard Half

The whiteboard half uses lacquered steel rather than melamine, providing a magnetic surface alongside the dry-wipe functionality. This gives the whiteboard section three display methods simultaneously: written content with dry-wipe markers, magnetic document and photo attachment, and combination of written annotation with magnetically held reference material. The lacquered steel surface has better resistance to ghosting than melamine over intensive use, and erases cleanly with a dry cloth. Clean weekly with whiteboard spray to maintain the surface quality.

Felt or Cork Noticeboard Half: Two Surface Options

The noticeboard half is available in felt or cork. Felt is available in blue and grey for professional environments, accepts standard push pins cleanly, and is the more common choice for staff rooms, offices, and nursing stations where the surface must complement the room colour scheme. Cork provides a natural material appearance with its self-healing property that closes pin holes after removal, maintaining the surface appearance over years of intensive use. Choose felt for colour-coordinated institutional environments; choose cork for offices and educational settings where a natural surface aesthetic is preferred.

How Nursing Stations and Staff Rooms Use Combination Boards

In NHS nursing stations, the whiteboard half is used for patient handover information, bed occupancy notes, and escalation communications that change with each shift; the noticeboard half holds shift rotas, compliance policy notices, emergency contact lists, and statutory information that stays in position for weeks. These two content types have different update frequencies and different pin-or-write requirements: trying to manage both on a single whiteboard requires erasing permanent information; trying to manage both on a single pinboard requires printing and replacing daily-update notices. The combination board separates these content types physically onto the appropriate surface.

Rotatable at Installation for Left or Right Whiteboard Position

The board can be rotated 180 degrees at installation to place the whiteboard section on the left or right side according to the room layout and the users' preferred working orientation. Most people write left to right and prefer the whiteboard on the left so that new content writes in the expected direction before transitioning to the pinboard reference section on the right. In some positions the reverse orientation suits the room layout better. Confirm your preferred orientation before drilling the wall fixings, as the fixing holes are symmetrical but repositioning after installation requires additional holes.

Anodised Aluminium Frame with Corner Caps and Pen Tray

The shared aluminium frame holds both surfaces under compression with a centre divider bar at the split point, preventing the two surfaces from touching or contaminating each other. Rounded corner caps conceal the fixing screws after installation for a clean finish. The pen tray clips to the bottom edge of the board below the whiteboard section and holds dry-wipe markers and an eraser. The full installation kit includes the wall fixings, plugs, screws, corner covers, and pen tray: no separate purchases needed for a complete installation.

Felt or Cork? 900x600mm or 1200x900mm?

Choose felt for professional NHS, corporate, and educational environments where the noticeboard colour should complement the room scheme. Choose cork for offices and classrooms where a natural material aesthetic is preferred and self-healing pin hole closure is valued over colour choice. Choose 900x600mm for small offices, nurse stations, and positions with limited wall width. Choose 1200x900mm for staff rooms and classrooms where both the whiteboard and noticeboard halves need a working area sufficient for a small group viewing distance.

For NHS Nursing Stations and Clinical Areas

The combination board is a standard fitting in NHS nursing stations. The magnetic whiteboard half displays handover information, patient status updates, and shift briefing notes; the felt noticeboard half displays rotas, policy documents, and statutory notices. Blue or grey felt complements the standard NHS clinical environment colour scheme. Standard combination boards suit nursing station positions inside ward areas; for positions in NHS corridors and circulation areas, confirm the Class B fire-rated version before purchasing.

For School Classrooms and Staff Rooms

In a classroom, the whiteboard half serves the same function as a standalone whiteboard for lesson delivery; the cork or felt half displays the class timetable, learning objectives, and displayed work that stays in position for the term. In a staff room, the whiteboard half is used for daily messages and urgent communications; the felt half holds the staff rota, INSET day schedule, and permanent notice documents. PO accepted from schools on 30-day credit terms. Standard boards suit classroom positions; fire-rated Class B versions required for school corridor positions.

For Small Offices and Reception Areas

A 900x600mm combination board suits the small office, reception area, or break room where wall space is limited but two display functions are both needed. The magnetic whiteboard half provides a surface for daily notes, phone messages, and quick diagrams; the cork or felt half holds the leave calendar, fire evacuation procedure, and permanent reference notices. A single unit with one wall fixing replaces two separate boards and the additional wall space they would require between them.

Efficient Communication for Every Environment:
The Displaysense Advantage

Displaysense has supplied combination boards to schools, NHS trusts, offices, and universities across the UK for nearly 50 years. We manufacture to consistent standards: the whiteboard section uses lacquered steel that resists ghosting under intensive use, and the felt surface is upholstered under tension to prevent sagging over time. Both surfaces are held securely in the shared frame without contact between them. The full installation kit is included with every board for a complete clean wall installation without separate purchases.

What is a combination board and when should I choose one over separate boards?
A combination board is a single wall-mounted unit with a 50/50 split between a magnetic dry-wipe whiteboard on one half and a pinnable felt or cork noticeboard on the other, all within a shared aluminium frame. Choose a combination board when you need both a dry-wipe writing surface and a pin surface and have limited wall space for two separate boards, or when both surfaces serve the same work area and it is more practical to have them on a single unit at a consistent reference height. If you need a large full-width whiteboard for detailed teaching or presentation use, a standalone whiteboard provides more dry-wipe surface. If you need a large full-width pinboard for displaying a large amount of permanent content, a standalone noticeboard provides more pin surface. The combination board is the right choice when moderate amounts of both are needed in one place.
What is the difference between the felt and cork noticeboard options?
Felt is a fabric surface available in blue and grey. It accepts push pins cleanly and is the standard choice for NHS nursing stations, corporate offices, and educational environments where the board colour should complement the room. Felt pin holes remain visible after pin removal. Cork has a natural warm appearance and its elastic cell structure closes pin holes after removal, keeping the surface cleaner-looking over extended use. Cork is not available in different colours; it has the standard natural cork appearance. Choose felt for colour-coordinated professional environments; choose cork for classrooms and offices where natural material aesthetics are preferred and pin hole closure over time is valued.
Are combination boards fire-rated for corridor use in schools and hospitals?
Standard combination boards use felt or cork on the noticeboard half without fire-retardant treatment, making them suitable for office, classroom, and staff room positions but not for school corridors, NHS circulation areas, stairwells, or fire escape routes where BS EN 13501-1 Class B is required. We offer fire-rated Class B combination boards with fire-retardant treated fabric on the noticeboard half and the appropriate substrate specification for corridor compliance. Select the fire-rated version specifically if the board will be permanently installed in a circulation area or escape route. Confirm certification documentation is included with fire-rated orders for your fire risk assessment records.
Can I choose which side the whiteboard is on?
Yes. The board can be rotated 180 degrees at installation, placing the whiteboard section on the left or right side. The fixing holes are symmetrical, so the rotated orientation uses the same four corner fixing points. Decide on your preferred orientation before drilling the wall fixings. Most users prefer the whiteboard on the left so that written content flows left-to-right before transitioning to the reference pinboard section on the right, matching the natural left-to-right reading and writing direction. In some room layouts the reverse orientation suits the workflow better. You cannot change the orientation after installation without drilling new fixing holes.
How do I install a combination board?
The board uses a corner fixing system: remove the four corner caps, drill through the holes at each corner into the wall at the correct height, insert the supplied wall plugs, screw the board to the wall using the supplied screws, and snap the corner caps back over the screw heads to conceal them. All fixings, plugs, screws, and corner caps are included in the installation kit. Use a spirit level to confirm the board is horizontal before drilling. The corner fixing points are symmetrical, allowing either orientation (whiteboard left or whiteboard right) using the same four holes. On plasterboard partition walls, confirm the fixing points align with wall studs or use cavity fixings with the appropriate load rating for the board weight.
How do I maintain the whiteboard half to prevent ghosting?
Erase dry-wipe marker content as soon as possible after writing rather than leaving it to dry completely on the surface; dried ink is harder to erase cleanly and contributes to ghosting over time. Use a soft felt eraser for daily erasing and clean the whiteboard half weekly with whiteboard cleaning spray and a soft cloth to remove residual ink from the surface. Do not use permanent markers on the whiteboard surface; if permanent marker is accidentally applied, trace over it immediately with a dry-wipe marker and erase both together before the dry-wipe ink dries. The lacquered steel surface on combination boards is more resistant to ghosting than melamine, but regular weekly cleaning is still the correct maintenance to maintain long-term surface quality.
Do you accept Purchase Orders from schools and NHS trusts?
Yes. We accept official Purchase Orders from state schools, academies, colleges, universities, NHS trusts, local councils, and all public sector organisations on 30-day credit terms. Fire-rated Class B certification documentation is provided with all fire-rated combination boards for compliance records. Volume discounts apply for large quantity orders covering multiple boards for classroom fit-outs, ward installations, and staff room supplies.
