Mannequin Torsos:
Space-Saving Retail Display Forms

Mannequin torsos are half-form display figures covering the head, chest, and hips without legs, designed for countertop, shelf, and clothes rail mounting. PE plastic torsos for transport and pop-up retail; fibreglass torsos for permanent premium display; fabric-covered busts for tailoring and pinning. Height-adjustable metal stands on most models. Hanging versions with neck hook for clothes rail and wall hook mounting. Ghost mannequin technique: matte finish torsos designed for post-production removal from e-commerce product photography. Male and female forms available. Pair with full-body mannequins from our mannequins range for complete floor and counter display.

A full-body mannequin requires floor space and height clearance. A torso on a countertop requires neither: it sits on a display surface at eye level, presents the upper body garment at the height and angle where customers make their purchasing decision, and is dressed and undressed in seconds because there are no legs to thread or arms to manage. For a market stall, pop-up shop, or boutique counter where floor space is limited and stock changes daily, torsos provide the garment display function of a full mannequin at a fraction of the space and weight cost.

Our torso range covers female and male half-forms in PE plastic, fibreglass, and fabric-covered options for retail display, photography, and tailoring. For full-body standing mannequins see our female mannequins and male mannequins collections.

Eye Level

Countertop Eye-Level Display Without Floor Space

A torso placed on a retail counter presents the garment at the height where a browsing customer's eyes rest naturally without requiring any floor footprint. In a boutique with 30 square metres of selling floor, the difference between a full mannequin using 0.3 square metres of floor and a torso using none is a meaningful addition to the display capacity. At a market stall, a countertop torso turns the front edge of the display table into a three-dimensional garment presentation that a flat-folded display does not provide. The stand height is adjustable to position the torso at the exact eye level for the specific counter height.

Upper Body Garment Display at Full-Mannequin Visual Impact

For t-shirts, shirts, hoodies, jackets, knitwear, lingerie, and any upper body garment, a torso provides the same three-dimensional drape and fit presentation as a full mannequin at a significantly lower cost per unit. The lower half of the mannequin contributes nothing to the display of an upper body garment; the torso removes the unnecessary lower half and the floor space it requires while maintaining the garment presentation quality. For accessories including scarves, necklaces, and hats, the torso's head and neck provide the mounting point that a hanger rail cannot offer.

Ghost Mannequin Technique for E-Commerce Photography

The ghost mannequin (also called invisible mannequin) technique photographs garments on a matte finish torso, then removes the torso form in post-production, leaving the garment appearing to float in the shape of a worn body. This produces the professional product photography standard used by online fashion retailers where the garment shows its three-dimensional cut, construction, and drape without a visible mannequin or model. Our matte finish torsos are specifically chosen to be easy to select and remove in photo editing software. Shoot multiple garments quickly by dressing and photographing the torso in sequence rather than on a live model.

PE Plastic, Fibreglass, and Fabric-Covered: Three Material Choices

PE (polyethylene) plastic torsos are the lightest and most impact-resistant option, suitable for frequent transport to markets, pop-up events, and trade shows where the torso is packed and unpacked regularly. Fibreglass torsos have a harder surface and a premium visual finish suited to permanent boutique counter and showroom display positions. Fabric-covered busts have a pinnable surface that accepts dress pins during garment fitting and tailoring, making them the correct format for tailors, dressmakers, and fashion studios where garments are pinned to the form during construction and adjustment.

Armless Design: Dress and Undress in Seconds

The absence of arms on a torso eliminates the sleeve-threading step that makes dressing a full mannequin slow. A t-shirt, hoodie, or jacket slips over the head of the torso and drops into position in a single motion. For a market trader changing the displayed garment between customer conversations, or an e-commerce photographer working through a stack of 50 items in a session, the dressing speed of a torso versus a full mannequin is a practical operational advantage that accumulates significantly over a trading day or a photography session.

Hanging Torsos for Clothes Rail and Wall Hook Mounting

Hanging torso models have a neck hook rather than a base stand, allowing them to hang from a clothes rail crossbar or a wall hook at the same height as garments on hangers. This eliminates the countertop footprint entirely and integrates the torso into a clothes rail display run, presenting one dressed torso alongside adjacent hanging garments for a combined display that shows both garment drape on a form and flat-hung alternatives. The hanging torso moves along the rail with other stock and stores in the same way.

Retail Display, Photography or Tailoring?

PE plastic torsos suit market traders, pop-up retail, and e-commerce photographers who transport torsos between locations regularly. Fibreglass torsos suit permanent boutique and showroom counter display where a premium surface finish is the priority. Fabric-covered busts suit tailors, dressmakers, and fashion studios where the form must accept dress pins. Hanging torsos suit clothes rail integration in any retail or storage position without a counter surface.

For Retail Display and Pop-Up Shops

PE plastic torsos with height-adjustable stands suit market stalls, pop-up retail positions, and boutique counters where the torso is set up and taken down regularly. The lightweight impact-resistant material withstands the transport and handling of regular event use. For permanent boutique display where the torso stays in position and is viewed at close range by browsing customers, fibreglass provides the premium surface finish that communicates quality. Pair with retail display hardware for a complete counter merchandising setup.

For E-Commerce Photography

Matte white or grey PE plastic or fibreglass torsos suit the ghost mannequin photography technique for e-commerce product photography. The matte finish minimises reflective hotspots that complicate the post-production removal process. Shoot in a consistent studio setup with a fixed camera position to produce a uniform product image series across all garments. A torso allows a single photographer to dress, photograph, and undress garments without a model, producing consistent quality at volume. Both male and female forms in the UK standard sizing (female UK 8-10, male 38-40" chest) suit the garment size range most commonly photographed for e-commerce.

For Tailoring and Dressmaking

Fabric-covered busts accept dress pins directly into the surface, allowing garments to be pinned flat to the form during construction, fitting, and alteration. The fabric surface also accepts chalk marking for fitting adjustments. Standard dress forms are available in adjustable sizes covering multiple standard dress sizes on a single form. For fashion students, bespoke tailors, and alterations services, the fabric-covered bust is the correct format for working with garments on a form rather than simply displaying finished garments.

Flexible Merchandising Solutions:
The Displaysense Advantage

Displaysense has supplied mannequins and display forms to retailers, fashion businesses, and photographers across the UK for nearly 50 years. We understand that not every retail environment has the floor space for full-body mannequins, and that the practical requirements of a market trader, an e-commerce photographer, and a boutique display manager are different uses that require different form specifications. Our torso range covers all three with PE plastic, fibreglass, and fabric-covered forms in male and female versions with appropriate stand and mounting options for each use.

What is a half-form torso and how is it different from a full mannequin?
A half-form torso is a display figure that includes the head, neck, chest, and hips but excludes the legs and usually the arms. It is designed to display upper body garments including t-shirts, shirts, hoodies, jackets, and knitwear, as well as accessories including scarves, necklaces, and hats. A full mannequin includes the complete body and stands on the floor. The torso is placed on a countertop stand or hangs from a rail. The practical differences are: the torso requires no floor space; it costs significantly less than a full mannequin; it is lighter and easier to transport; and garments are dressed and undressed faster without legs to thread. For lower body garment display (trousers, skirts, shorts) a full or lower-body mannequin is required as a torso does not display these garments.
What is the ghost mannequin photography technique?
The ghost mannequin technique is a product photography method where a garment is photographed on a torso form, then the torso form is removed from the image in post-production editing, leaving the garment appearing to float in the three-dimensional shape of a body wearing it. This produces the professional product imagery used by online fashion retailers: the garment shows its construction, cut, and drape in three dimensions without a visible mannequin or model in the shot. To achieve clean removal in post-production, use a matte finish torso (not gloss, which creates reflective hotspots that complicate the selection), shoot on a plain background, and maintain consistent lighting that does not cast the torso's shadow onto the garment.
What is the difference between PE plastic, fibreglass, and fabric-covered torsos?
PE (polyethylene) plastic torsos are the lightest and most impact-resistant format, suitable for frequent transport to markets, pop-up events, and trade shows. They withstand knocks during handling and transit without cracking or chipping. Fibreglass torsos have a harder, smoother surface with a premium visual finish: the correct choice for permanent boutique counter and showroom display where the form is viewed at close range by customers. Fabric-covered busts have a pinnable fabric surface that accepts dress pins, the required format for tailoring and dressmaking where garments are pinned to the form during fitting and construction. Plastic and fibreglass torsos cannot accept pins in the same way.
Do torsos come with stands and can the height be adjusted?
Most of our torso models are supplied with a metal stand that connects at the base of the torso form or at the neck, raising the form to counter or shelf display height. The stand is typically height-adjustable within a range of approximately 30 to 50cm, allowing the torso to be positioned at the correct eye level for the specific counter height and viewing distance. Hanging torso models use a neck hook rather than a base stand and hang from a clothes rail crossbar or wall hook without requiring a stand or countertop surface. Confirm the stand type and height range on the specific product listing before ordering for a position with a specific height requirement.
Can torsos be hung on a clothes rail instead of placed on a counter?
Yes. Our hanging torso models have a neck hook rather than a base stand, allowing them to hang from a clothes rail crossbar, wall hook, or S-hook at the same height as hanging garments on hangers. The hanging torso integrates into a clothes rail display run, presenting one dressed torso alongside adjacent hanging stock for a combined display format. The hanging torso moves along the rail with other stock and stores in the same way. Check the neck hook weight rating and the clothes rail's maximum load when planning a hanging torso installation alongside a fully loaded garment rail.
Which size torso should I order for UK retail sizing?
For female garment display in UK retail sizing, our standard female torsos are sized to a UK 10 to 12 (approximately 34" bust), which fits the midpoint of the standard size range and allows garments from UK 8 to UK 14 to be displayed with appropriate fit without excessive excess fabric or tight stretching across the form. For male garment display, our standard male torso is sized to approximately 38" chest, which suits the mid-range of standard UK menswear sizing. For garment photography where the displayed size must match the specific garment size sold on the listing, match the torso size to the garment size being photographed rather than using a mid-range form for all sizes.
Do you offer bulk pricing for fashion retailers and photography studios?
Yes. We offer volume discounts for fashion retailers equipping multiple display positions, e-commerce photography studios building out their shooting kit, market traders ordering a full stock of display forms, and fashion education departments equipping student workspaces.
