A-Board Pavement Signs:
Weatherproof Sandwich Boards

An A-board (sandwich board or A-frame) is a double-sided self-standing pavement sign that folds flat for storage and transport. Available in A2, A1, and A0 in aluminium snap-frame versions with weatherproof rubber seals and UV-stable PVC covers for printed poster display, and in wooden chalkboard versions for handwritten daily specials using liquid chalk pens. Galvanised steel back panels on premium models prevent frame flex. Suitable for sheltered and moderately exposed high street positions; upgrade to wind-resistant water-base signs for exposed forecourts.

A-boards are the most portable and versatile street-level pavement sign: fold flat in seconds for daily indoor storage, set up in under a minute, and change the poster without any tools. Our aluminium snap-frame versions update between promotions in seconds; our wooden chalkboard versions update daily specials with liquid chalk pens in under a minute.

Our most popular A-boards include the A1 weather-resistant black A-board for retail and restaurant poster display, the heavyweight outdoor chalk A-board for daily specials, and the black wooden outdoor chalk A-board for a rustic pub and cafe aesthetic. For exposed forecourt and car park positions where standard A-boards blow over, upgrade to our A1 wind-resistant waterbase pavement sign.

Snap Frame Poster Change in Seconds

Our aluminium A-boards feature snap frame edges on both sides. Clip open all four edges, swap the poster insert, close. Both sides update independently, allowing different promotions facing opposite directions. The whole operation takes under 60 seconds with no tools.

Weatherproof Rubber Seals and UV Covers

Integrated rubber gaskets and UV-stable PVC covers protect poster inserts from rain and sun fading on standard British high streets. For best outdoor poster longevity, use our waterproof polypropylene printing service rather than standard paper, or laminate standard paper posters before inserting.

Wooden Chalkboard A-Boards for Daily Specials

Our heavyweight outdoor chalk A-board and black wooden version update with waterproof liquid chalk pens in under a minute — no printing, no laminating, no poster inserts. The rustic handwritten aesthetic suits pubs, cafes, gastro restaurants, and independent retailers where a personal daily-specials board is part of the brand identity.

Fold Flat for Daily Indoor Storage

The A-frame design folds flat in seconds, making daily indoor storage practical for any staff member. Folded boards stack compactly in a doorway or stockroom, protecting the frame and poster from overnight theft and vandalism without requiring a dedicated storage area.

A2, A1, and A0 Double-Sided

All our A-boards are double-sided, capturing pedestrians approaching from both directions. A1 (594x841mm) is the high street standard for maximum pedestrian visibility. A2 (420x594mm) suits narrower pavements and cafe entrances where a full A1 would obstruct foot traffic. A0 (841x1189mm) provides maximum display area for larger retail and event positions.

Galvanised Steel Back Panel for Rigidity

Premium aluminium A-board models include a galvanised steel back panel that adds structural rigidity and frame weight, preventing the board from flexing or bowing over time. Steel backs also add stability in light breezes, making them more stable than plastic-back equivalents on similarly sheltered high street positions.

Poster A-Board, Chalk A-Board or Wind-Resistant Sign?

For promotions that change weekly or seasonally, choose an aluminium snap-frame A-board for printed poster display. For daily specials and menus that change every day, choose a wooden or heavyweight chalk A-board updated with liquid chalk pens. For exposed forecourts, car parks, and retail parks where wind stability is the primary concern, upgrade to a wind-resistant water-base sign with spring-mounted frame. Standard A-boards are not suitable for exposed forecourt positions.

For Printed Poster Promotions

Our A1 weather-resistant black A-board is the high street standard for retail, restaurant, and cafe promotions on standard pedestrian pavements. Snap frame edges on both sides change posters in under 60 seconds. Pair with our waterproof poster printing service for graphics that won't wrinkle outdoors.

For Daily Specials and Handwritten Menus

Our heavyweight outdoor chalk A-board for a modern aesthetic and black wooden chalk A-board for a rustic pub-and-cafe look both update with waterproof liquid chalk pens in under a minute. No printing, no laminating, no cost per update. The weather-sealed frame handles standard UK rain.

For Exposed Forecourts and Car Parks

Standard A-boards are suitable for sheltered high street positions in moderate conditions. For exposed forecourts, car parks, retail parks, and seafront positions where wind regularly exceeds standard A-board stability, upgrade to our A1 wind-resistant waterbase pavement sign with spring-mounted frame and water-fillable base rated to Beaufort 4-5.

What is the difference between a standard A-board and a wind-resistant pavement sign?
A standard A-board is a lightweight fold-flat frame relying on its own structural weight for stability. It suits sheltered high street positions in moderate wind conditions where the priority is daily portability and quick poster changes. A wind-resistant pavement sign uses a heavy weighted base (solid rubber or water-fillable to 50 litres) and a spring-mounted frame that flexes with gusts, achieving Beaufort 4-5 wind ratings suitable for exposed forecourts, car parks, and retail parks. If your sign regularly blows over, you need a wind-resistant sign rather than a heavier A-board.
What size A-board is best for my business?
A1 (594x841mm) is the high street standard, providing maximum visibility at pedestrian eye level without blocking foot traffic on a standard pavement width. A2 (420x594mm) suits narrower pavement positions, cafe entrances, and locations where a full A1 board would leave insufficient pedestrian clearance. A0 (841x1189mm) is for large retail, event, and forecourt positions where greater visibility from a distance is needed. Check with your local authority on the minimum pedestrian clearance required for your specific pavement width before deciding on size.
Can I write on all A-boards with chalk or chalk pens?
No. You can only write on dedicated chalkboard A-boards. Our heavyweight chalk A-board and black wooden chalk A-board have a specially prepared chalkboard surface designed for use with liquid chalk pens. Standard aluminium snap-frame A-boards have a PVC poster cover and aluminium frame that chalk pens will not write on clearly and cannot be erased cleanly.
Do I need council permission to place an A-board on the pavement?
In most UK local authority areas, placing an A-board on a public pavement requires either a pavement licence or compliance with local street trading conditions. You must generally leave a clear pedestrian path of at least 1.5 to 1.8m alongside the sign. Rules vary by council — some require a formal application, others have a general policy. Signs on your own private forecourt, car park, or land generally do not require specific permission. Check with your local authority before placing signs on public pavements to avoid fines or removal orders.
Are A-boards weatherproof for year-round outdoor use?
Our aluminium snap-frame A-boards have rubber gasket seals and UV-stable PVC covers that protect printed poster inserts from direct rain and sun fading in typical UK weather. For maximum poster longevity, use our waterproof polypropylene printing service rather than standard paper, which can wrinkle from outdoor condensation over time even with weatherproof sealing. Wooden chalk A-boards handle standard rain well when used with waterproof liquid chalk pens — bring them inside during prolonged heavy rain to maximise lifespan.
Should I bring A-boards inside overnight?
Yes. Our A-boards are weather-resistant but bringing them inside overnight prevents theft and vandalism of the sign itself and the poster inside. The fold-flat A-frame design makes daily storage practical: fold, carry, and stack compactly inside a doorway or stockroom. This daily routine takes under a minute for standard A1 and A2 boards and significantly extends the working life of both the frame and the poster inserts.
Do you offer bulk pricing on A-boards for multiple locations?
Yes. We supply major coffee chains, pub groups, and retail companies with A-boards across multiple locations. Volume discounts apply from small quantities. Contact our team for a consolidated quote covering your required board type, size, and quantity in a single order, with coordinated delivery to multiple addresses if required.
