How to Choose

What is the difference between a blackboard and a chalkboard?

There is no functional difference: both terms describe a dark writing surface designed for chalk or liquid chalk pen use. "Blackboard" is the traditional term associated with classroom education; "chalkboard" is more commonly used in hospitality and retail contexts. All of our products described as chalkboards or blackboards use the same HPL or painted surface and are compatible with both traditional stick chalk and liquid chalk pens. We use both terms interchangeably.

What is the difference between liquid chalk pens and traditional stick chalk?

Liquid chalk pens contain a chalk-based ink in a marker format that produces vibrant, bold, opaque lines visible from pavement distance in any lighting condition. Once dry, many liquid chalk formulations are rain-resistant, making the message legible through light rain on outdoor boards used with waterproof chalk pen varieties. Traditional stick chalk produces a softer, dusty line that fades in rain, is harder to read from a distance, and leaves more residue on the board surface. For outdoor chalkboards and any board used for daily display in public hospitality environments, liquid chalk pens are the correct choice. Stick chalk is only appropriate for indoor blackboard use where rain and distance visibility are not factors.

Why does my chalkboard ghost and how do I fix it?

Ghosting occurs when liquid chalk ink absorbs into the pores of the board surface over repeated use, leaving a permanent faint outline of previous content that is visible through new writing. It is most common on painted wood and low-grade blackboard paint surfaces, which are porous. HPL surfaces have no pores for ink to absorb into and do not ghost. For a board that already has ghosting: apply specialist chalkboard cleaner spray, leave for 60 seconds, wipe firmly with a damp cloth or magic eraser sponge. For persistent ghosting on painted surfaces, sanding and repainting with blackboard paint may be needed. The correct long-term solution is to replace a ghosting painted board with an HPL board.

Are chalkboards suitable for outdoor use?

It depends on the board type. Standard indoor chalkboards with basic painted surfaces are not suitable for outdoor use as moisture absorption causes the surface to crack, the frame to warp, and any chalk to wash away. Our outdoor chalkboards use exterior-grade HPL surfaces and marine-grade varnished solid wood frames designed for outdoor exposure. These must be used with waterproof liquid chalk pens for the message to be rain-resistant. Our A-frame chalkboards are weather-treated for outdoor pavement use with daily indoor storage at closing time.
