Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do schools need fire resistant noticeboards?
It depends on where the board is fixed. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, a school's fire risk assessment governs what is allowed in each area. Building Bulletin 100 (BB100), the Department for Education's fire safety guidance for schools, expects fire resistant materials on corridors, stairwells and escape routes, where surfaces should meet BS EN 13501-1 Class B (formerly described as Class 0). Standard cork and felt boards are not compliant in those positions. In classrooms away from escape routes, standard boards are generally acceptable.
What noticeboards are suitable for school corridors?
On corridors and circulation areas that form escape routes, BB100 sets clear limits: noticeboards should be covered by glass or polycarbonate, be no more than 3m long, and have a gap of at least 1m between them, with surfaces rated to BS EN 13501-1 Class B. Fire safety guidance commonly adds that dead-end corridors and protected stairways allow only glazed, fire-rated boards, while corridors with an alternative escape route may use open fire-rated boards up to 20% of the wall and ceiling area. A glazed, fire-rated cabinet is the safe default.
Can noticeboards be used on escape routes?
Yes, within limits. BB100 allows noticeboards on escape routes provided they are covered by glass or polycarbonate, no more than 3m long, with at least a 1m gap between boards, and made from materials rated to BS EN 13501-1 Class B. Open cork or felt boards are not suitable on an escape route. The school's fire risk assessment, required under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, is the final arbiter.
What fire rating do school noticeboards need?
In circulation areas such as corridors, stairwells and escape routes, noticeboard surfaces should be rated to BS EN 13501-1 Class B, the standard that replaced the old Class 0 description, so flame spread is limited. Boards larger than 1m2 in teaching spaces should also be tested to BS 5852. Reputable fire-rated boards come with certification you can keep on file for inspections. Standard, non-rated cork and felt boards are fine in low-risk classroom positions away from escape routes.
Are lockable noticeboards secure?
Lockable noticeboards have a glazed door and a key lock, so content cannot be changed or removed without a key. This protects approved information and suits receptions, public areas and safeguarding notices where only authorised staff should update what is shown.
What is the best noticeboard for a reception area?
Receptions usually suit a lockable, glazed noticeboard that looks smart and keeps displayed information secure and tidy. It is a good place for visitor information, school values and key contacts, and a board that matches the school branding helps create a strong first impression for parents and visitors.
How do I maintain my noticeboard?
Fabric boards need little more than an occasional brush or vacuum. Glazed doors wipe clean with a soft cloth. Choosing durable, commercial-grade boards from the start keeps maintenance low in busy school environments.
What should be displayed on a safeguarding noticeboard?
A safeguarding noticeboard commonly includes the Designated Safeguarding Lead, deputy DSL contacts, reporting routes, anti-bullying information, online safety advice, mental health support and emergency contacts. The aim is to make support visible and easy to access.
What information should be displayed in a school reception area?
School reception noticeboards often show visitor procedures, safeguarding contacts, school values, key dates, attendance information, policies and parent communications. A lockable glazed board keeps the area tidy and prevents unauthorised changes.
How do noticeboards improve student engagement?
Noticeboards improve engagement by making opportunities visible. Clubs, careers information, competitions, wellbeing campaigns, achievements and student voice updates are easier for pupils to notice when displayed in high-traffic areas.
What should be included on a mental health noticeboard?
A mental health noticeboard can include wellbeing tips, counselling contacts, NHS or local support services, peer support routes, anti-bullying information, crisis contacts and campaign materials around stress, anxiety and exam pressure.
What are British Values noticeboards?
British Values noticeboards help schools communicate democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance. They often include student examples, assemblies, citizenship projects and classroom work linked to these themes.
How can schools improve communication with students?
Schools can improve communication by combining digital channels with visible physical displays. Noticeboards work well for recurring messages, events, support services, attendance campaigns and reminders in corridors, receptions and common areas.
What is BB100?
Building Bulletin 100, usually known as BB100, is Department for Education guidance on fire safety design for schools. It includes advice on internal linings, corridors, escape routes and the use of display materials such as noticeboards.
Are lockable noticeboards recommended for safeguarding information?
Yes. Lockable noticeboards are a sensible choice for safeguarding information because they keep approved content visible while preventing unauthorised removal, alteration or tampering.
