Retractable Queue Barriers:
The Professional Standard

Retractable belt barriers (stanchions) use a centrifugal braking mechanism that ensures the belt retracts slowly if released, preventing dangerous snap-backs. Posts stand 910mm to 1000mm tall with cast-iron or concrete bases of 7 to 10kg. Belt lengths from 2.1m to 3.4m; space posts at approximately 90% of belt length to maintain tension. Universal belt ends are compatible with Tensabarrier and most major brands. Twin belt models provide DDA-compliant low and high barrier levels. Custom printed belts available on bulk orders.

Displaysense retractable belt barriers are the industry standard for high-footfall queue management in airports, retail stores, banks, hospitals, hotels, and event venues. Centrifugal braking mechanisms ensure safe slow retraction, heavy cast-iron bases prevent tipping in busy crowds, and 4-way connection posts allow straight lines, 90-degree corners, and T-junctions from a single stanchion.

Our most popular retractable barriers include the Tensabarrier Advance black post with 2.3m black belt, the chrome post with 2.3m red belt for high-visibility queue definition, and our A4 barrier sign holders for attaching directional and "Please Wait Here" messaging to post tops.

Centrifugal Braking for Safe Retraction

Every retractable unit uses a centrifugal braking mechanism that automatically slows belt retraction when released, preventing the dangerous snap-back that can strike customers and staff. The industry safety standard for public-facing crowd control in airports, retail, and hospitals. Unlike cheap imported units that lose braking tension over time, our mechanisms are cycle-tested for years of daily use.

Universal Belt Ends for Existing Systems

Our universal belt ends clip securely into most major barrier brands including Tensabarrier, allowing seamless extension of your existing queue system without replacing all posts. Mix chrome, black, and satin finishes within the same layout where replacement posts need to join existing hardware.

4-Way Connection for Any Layout

Each post has one extendable belt and three receiving slots, allowing straight lines, 90-degree corners, and T-junctions from a single stanchion. Build any queue configuration from switchback corridors to wide lobby entry points using the same post throughout, reducing stock complexity.

Heavy-Duty Anti-Topple Bases

Cast-iron or concrete bases of 7 to 10kg with rubber floor protectors prevent tipping under crowd pressure and protect floor surfaces from scratching in public spaces. Stable enough to remain upright in busy retail and airport environments without wall fixing or ground anchoring.

Extended Belt Lengths to 3.4m

Belt lengths from 2.1m to 3.4m. Longer belts reduce the number of posts needed to cover large entrance lobbies, airport concourses, and wide event spaces, lowering the cost per metre of queue barrier without sacrificing the appearance of a taut, professional line.

Custom Printed Belts and Multiple Finishes

Custom printed belts with company logos and safety messages reinforce brand identity and provide visible communication in the queue. Available in chrome, black, satin, and stainless finishes to match lobby and retail aesthetics. Custom belt printing available on bulk orders.

Single Belt, Twin Belt or Wall-Mounted?

For standard retail, airport, and hospital queues, single belt retractable barriers provide flexible reconfigurable queue lanes. For DDA-compliant installations where visually impaired visitors use white canes, twin belt barriers provide a detectable low belt alongside the standard high belt. For corridors and narrow areas where floor space is premium, wall-mounted retractable barriers eliminate the post footprint entirely while providing the same belt mechanism.

For Retail, Airports and Hospitals

Our Tensabarrier Advance black post and chrome post with red belt are the high-volume queue standard. Fast to reconfigure between peak and quiet periods, with centrifugal braking for busy public environments. Space posts at 1.8m to 2.3m for a taut professional line.

For DDA-Compliant Installations

Twin belt barriers feature two belts on the same post at different heights. The low belt is detectable by visually impaired visitors using white canes, making the queue barrier system DDA compliant. The second belt also prevents children from ducking under standard single-belt barriers. Required for public sector buildings and any venue with an accessibility compliance obligation.

For Corridors and Wall-Adjacent Areas

Wall-mounted retractable barriers fix to walls and extend a belt across a corridor or opening without any floor-standing posts. Use a wall receiver clip to terminate a belt from a floor post onto the wall, or install a dedicated wall unit for permanent corridor access control. Belts retract flush when not in use, removing the obstruction entirely.

Engineered for Traffic:
The Displaysense Advantage

Displaysense is a trusted UK supplier of commercial crowd control systems. Our retractable barrier units undergo rigorous cycle testing to ensure centrifugal braking mechanisms and spring systems maintain taut, professional belt tension across years of daily use. Unlike cheap imported units that lose braking tension or snap after months of high-frequency use, our barriers maintain a consistent, reliable performance throughout their service life.

How far apart should I space the posts?
Space posts at approximately 90% of the belt length to maintain correct tension and a professional taut line. For a standard 2.3m belt, space posts at 1.8m to 2.1m. For a 3.4m extended belt, space posts at 2.8m to 3.0m. Spacing posts at the full belt length causes the belt to sag and allows the post to lean under the belt's weight. For detailed post spacing calculations and switchback queue layout planning, see our Queue Barriers Buying Guide.
What is a twin belt barrier and when is it required?
A twin belt barrier features two retractable belts on the same post at different heights: a standard high belt at approximately 900mm and a low belt at approximately 450mm. The low belt is detectable by visually impaired visitors using white canes, making the queue barrier system DDA compliant under the Equality Act 2010. Twin belt barriers are required in public sector buildings and venues with formal accessibility compliance obligations. They also prevent children from ducking under standard single-belt barriers at standard height.
Can I connect a retractable barrier belt to a wall?
Yes. A wall receiver clip mounts to the wall and accepts the belt end from a floor-standing post, terminating the belt line at the wall without needing a second post. This is useful for narrowing a corridor entrance or creating a queue endpoint against a wall. Alternatively, a dedicated wall-mounted retractable barrier unit mounts entirely to the wall, extending a belt across a corridor opening without any floor posts, and retracting flush when not in use.
Do you offer custom printed belts with logos?
Yes. Custom printed belts are available on bulk orders, featuring company logos, safety messages, directional text, and brand colour schemes. Printed belts are particularly effective in hotels and corporate lobbies where the queue barrier system should match the brand environment, and in venues requiring visible safety messaging such as "Social Distancing" or "Please Wait Here" woven into the belt itself.
Are retractable barriers suitable for outdoor use?
Standard metal post retractable barriers are designed for indoor use only. Outdoor weather causes the metal post and base to rust, and the belt mechanism to deteriorate in rain and UV exposure. For outdoor use in car parks, construction site entrances, and outdoor event queuing, select from our dedicated outdoor barrier range which features UV-stable plastic posts and water-fillable bases rated for exterior conditions year-round.
How do I add signage to a retractable barrier post?
Our A4 barrier sign holders slot directly onto the top of most retractable barrier posts without tools, displaying "Please Wait Here", queue instructions, and directional information at eye level in the queue rather than on a separate freestanding sign. The holder is removable when not needed, with no permanent modification to the post required.
Do you offer bulk pricing on retractable barriers?
Yes. We offer volume discounts for airports, retail chains, hotel groups, NHS trusts, local authorities, and event companies ordering multiple posts. Purchase orders accepted with 30-day credit terms for public sector organisations. Contact our team for a bespoke quote covering your required post count, belt colour, and finish in a single consolidated order.
